Dear Friends of CAMP,
We are slowly coming up to spring and we at CAMP are preparing once again to search for the Jefferson Salamander!
We had a visit from Mr. Don Scallen this past meeting on Jan 20th 2016 and it was very informative and helped many of our CAMP friends understand the importance of this little creature! CAMP decided that we will move to set up our teams again this year to gather information and continue our search for the Jefferson Salamander. This creature exists locally and CAMP believes that they make their home close to ours and that finding their habitats is essential to help us “STOP the Melville Pit”
Please do what you can – with either volunteering with our group research team or giving us permission to be on your property to do our research!
We have a scheduled meeting for Feb 10th 2016 at 7pm at the Alton library for this special team of interested people. We require people to ensure signatures on permission forms, and teams of actual pond and area searchers and hunters! The plan will be laid out along with materials and supplies to teams of 2 or more to conduct this project. Please reply to me if you are interested. We are looking for approx. 20 people as this research must be performed in a very short window of time of approx. 2 weeks in early April! We need to make sure the plan is in place and that we are ready to go!
- SALAMANDER: The Jefferson Salamander, an endangered species, has been known to live in the area of the proposed Olympia pit and since it currently falls under the Endangered Species Act, the Jefferson Salamander’s habitat must be protected! Our experts will be conducting our second annual thorough hands-on research this spring to verify the Jefferson Salamander’s existence in our area. Our researchers will be taking samples from local ponds and pools to in the hopes of verifying Jefferson Salamander DNA.
